A Few Things to Know, Before You Start...

Do U.S. Citizens Need a Schengen Visa?

No. U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short stays in the Schengen Area for tourism or business purposes.

You can visit the Schengen Zone for:

  • Up to 90 days within any 180-day period

  • Tourism, business meetings, family visits, or short-term travel

This rule applies as long as you hold a valid U.S. passport and meet entry requirements.

What Is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is a group of 29 European countries that allow free movement between them without internal border checks. Once you enter one Schengen country, you can travel freely to others within the zone.

The Schengen Area includes the following 29 countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Key Schengen Entry Rules for U.S. Citizens

Even though no visa is required for short stays, you must follow strict entry conditions:

1. The 90/180-Day Rule

  • You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period

  • After reaching 90 days, you must leave and wait before re-entering

2. Passport Validity

  • Your U.S. passport must be valid for your entire stay

  • Many countries recommend at least 3 months validity beyond departure

3. Purpose of Travel

Allowed:

  • Tourism

  • Business meetings

  • Family visits

  • Short events or conferences

Not allowed:

  • Long-term work

  • Long-term study

  • Paid employment
